How Do You Get Your Book in Barnes and Noble?

Anyone have any idea how to get your book into Barnes and Noble stores? My books is available online, but B&N (even the local stores) will not carry the book. I assume this is because my book was published by a small university press. Any ideas?

Sadly, Chris, there is a definite bias against small presses in any chain book store. Sometimes you can get them in individual Barnes and Noble stores as a local author, but most of the time the decision to carry them is made at the corporate level. Barnes and Noble has a very specific review policy at the corporate level that determines what books go into their stores. You can get the address from any Barnes and Noble store manager. However, don't expect to get anywhere. A stroll through one of their stores shows there are only a few recognized publishers that they are willing to carry and promote. Don't get discouraged, though. There are plenty of independent book stores that may carry your book(s). Best of luck, Mark

Hi Chris,

I had the same problem with my novel LOOK INTO THE EYES OF EVIL. The big chain stores and also the small ones would not take any books from a self published or small press author. This is the reason I started Author 2 U Books in the first place. I wanted to create an online store where the book would be featured and also can be bought instantly from the author. I'm in the process of adding a check out service to this site, and hope to get this accomplished soon.
The more Author 2 U Books is featured and visited by readers and authors alike the more success we will have selling our own books, and keep the profit.

I went to their website www.barnesandnobleinc.com, Small Press Dept., and found guidelines for submitting your book and application. If they accept it, they'll order some for their central warehouse. Their system is strange, though, because after their initial order of 25 books, it was no longer "in the system" when bookstores searched for it. I have it on my "to do" list to check into it again. Hope this helps.
